THE THIRD DIMENSION
Canadian Museum of Civilization
Gatineau, Quebec, 1996
An innovative Canadian technology for creating 3-D images of artifacts was the focus of a special exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Apropos Planning worked with museum staff, scientists and engineers to communicate this new technology.
Life-sized graphics of human figures and fixed 3-D glasses at different heights were used to lure visitors to observe the 3-D technology.
The Third Dimension featured an actual demon-stration of artifact scanning. The key interpretive message was the idea that this camera didnt take a picture of arti-facts, it measured them.
A key challenge in interpreting this complex technology was that we didnt initially understand how it worked. It took several discussions with techno experts to clarify the concepts. In the end, we used the explanation that clicked with us as the overall interpretive framework for the exhibit.
Visitors were able to manipulate scanned images to observe them from all angles. A second module was placed in a British Columbia museum.
