PIER 21
Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1999
Tears are not uncommon at Pier 21 as immigrants remember the moment they first set foot in this country.
As exhibit developer for this site, Apropos Planning worked with the design team to select stories, photos and experiences that preserved the stark integrity of the historic building while evoking a mood of contemplation and reflection. The visitor experience is organized around the icons of ship, waiting room and train and is anchored by a powerful multimedia show Oceans of Hope.
Apropos Planning developed the exhibit plan, selected images and objects, wrote the text and collaborated on the multimedia show.
Visiting Pier 21 is an emotional experience by design. Rather than try to convey the sites entire immigration history, we focused on the powerful feelings and memories of immigration.
Pier 21 takes visitors through the universal immigrant experience: leaving home, making the journey, landing, waiting, meeting the authorities, then setting out for a new home.
