SAINT CROIX ISLAND INTERNATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
Calais, Maine, 1996-2001

Nearly 400 years ago, French settlers built a colony on a tiny island in what is now Maine. Although tragedy struck, this colony marks the start of a lasting French presence in North America.

Apropos Planning has worked with the US National Park Service to plan interpretation services for this international historic site. We are now working on an interpretive trail to open in time for the site's 400th anniversary.

Apropos Planning developed an educational kit including artifact reproductions for Saint Croix. It has been highly rated by teachers. Kit design by Laurin Kinsella Design & Associates.

Apropos Planning developed the long-range interpretive plan for this site. Public consultations were held in both Canada and United States during the planning process.

We are now developing an interpretive trail highlighted by bronze figures which appear to come to life from the illustrations.

Client: US National Park Service
Collaborators: Design + Communications Inc.
